Elk Landing's Own Vintage Base Ball Club! Did you ever want to know what a sporting event was like in the 19 th century in Cecil County ? Elk Landing did not disappear after the War of 1812. In the 19 th century it was a very large working farm after the railroads and the canal lead to its shipping demise. As machinery was invented to help farmers, the local people suddenly found that they had some leisure time to themselves. In the 1860s a sporting event was very different from today. Not only did spectators watch a game, but they also caught up on the local gossip, listened to politicians on their soapboxes, heard big band music from the town band, bought wares from local vendors and so much more. Here at Elk Landing, we are re-creating that feel with our own vintage base ball club called the Eclipse Base Ball Club of Elkton. It is a member of the Vintage Base Ball Association and plays against other clubs up and down the east coast using the rules, customs, uniforms, and equipment of the 1860s. They play against other clubs such as the Flemington Neshanock, the New York Gothams, the New York Mutuals, the Easton Fairplays, and the Brooklyn Atlantics to name a few. Come out to Elk Landing for some of their home matches. They are always looking for players, umpires, and volunteers to help out.
